Meet the Experts

Donald R. Johnston is Senior Vice President/Group Publisher at AHC Media, BioWorld‘s parent company. Don has been at the helm of BioWorld Today and all of AHC’s related biotechnology products since 1994. As AHC’s Editorial Director, he runs a diverse group of more than 50 information services across the spectrum of healthcare. In addition to BioWorld Today, products include Medical Device Daily, our online news service focused on medical technology; Emergency Medicine Reports, an online and print clinical monograph; and AHC’s founding newsletter, Hospital Infection Control & Prevention. Don graduated from the University of California, Berkeley and also has a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University in New York. He was a newspaper reporter and editor in both consumer and trade magazine publishing before entering the newsletter business. He is a frequent speaker at both industry and publishing events, and is proud to have been at every Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) meeting since Toronto in 1994.

Lynn Yoffee is the executive editor of BioWorld Today, biotech’s most respected news source for more than two decades. She leads a team of journalists from around the world who produce daily insider intelligence on key business, scientific and regulatory news related to the biopharmaceutical industry. Lynn managed the BioWorld group in the mid 1990s and rejoined the team in 2010. A senior-level editor with 20+ years of diversified experience in health care and medical science publishing for targeted business-to-business and consumer audiences, Lynn has managed, conceived and launched more than two dozen specialty publications on health and medical topics ranging from nanotechnology to plastic surgery.

Jennifer Boggs joined the BioWorld group in 2004 as a staff writer after working for a number of years in newspapers. She was promoted to the position of assistant managing editor in 2008 and in 2011 was appointed as BioWorld’s managing editor. Jennifer was part of a BioWorld team that in 2009 produced a series examining how the recession impacted key biotechnology arenas which garnered a Specialized Information Publishers Association award. More recently, she won another SIPA award for her work covering Sanofi-Aventis SA’s efforts to acquire Genzyme Corp., one of the biggest acquisition deals in the history of the biotech industry.

Trista Morrison joined the BioWorld team in 2006 and currently serves as editor of BioWorld Insight, a weekly online newsletter providing behind-the-scenes perspective and in-depth analysis of the biotechnology industry, and staff writer for BioWorld Today. She previously worked at biotech-focused PR agencies Porter Novelli Life Sciences and Atkins + Associates.

As the Washington editor for BioWorld Today, Mari Serebrov covers key business and regulatory news related to the biopharmaceutical industry. Mari is a senior-level writer with 25+ years of diversified experience in publishing for academic, business-to-business and consumer audiences. She joined the BioWorld team in 2011.

Anette Breindl, PhD has been BioWorld’s science editor since 2004. Prior to joining BioWorld, she planned and executed corporate communications strategies for biotechnology companies at Akins + Associates, a public relations firm focused exclusively on life sciences clients. She has also worked as a freelance writer for U.S. and German publications, and co-authored several peer-reviewed papers. Anette earned a PhD from the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology in Magdeburg, Germany, and a BA from the University of California at Berkeley. She has been a recipient of research scholarships from the National Science Foundation and its German equivalent, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Anette is a member of the National Association of Science Writers.

Michael Harris is senior editor for BioWorld publications and has responsibility for the market reports and special editorial products of the company. He has been with BioWorld for 13 years and is a 15-year biotechnology media veteran.

 

Marie Powers served as a contributing writer for BioWorld Today before joining the staff in 2011. With more than 20 years on the health care beat, Marie has contributed to a variety of industry publications, including ENT Today, Managed Care Contracting & Reimbursement Advisor, Orthopaedic Practice Management, Neurology Practice Management, Capitation Management Report, Capitation Rates & Data, Physician Profiling & Behavior Change Report, and Women’s Health Center Management. She’s also served as a Contributing Editor to Technology Transfer Tactics.

Catherine Shaffer has been reporting about the life sciences industry since 2004, and joined the BioWorld team as a contributing writer in 2010. She has a background in science with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Michigan State University, and a master’s degree in biological chemistry from the University of Michigan. Prior to her journalism career, she worked as an associate scientist for Pfizer Inc. and an assistant scientist for Warner-Lambert Pharmaceutical Co. She has contributed to other publications including Genetic Engineering News, Drug Discovery and Development, Genomics and Proteomics, TechComm Journal, Wired News, Biocompare, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Medicine and Pharmacy Practice News. Catherine also is an author of short fiction, with a number of stories published in magazines and anthologies.

Nuala Moran has been part of the BioWorld team since 1996, covering the scientific and commercial development of the sector in Europe. She is a former managing editor of Nature and was Innovation Editor of the UK national newspaper, The Independent on Sunday. In 2006 Nuala was named as a Science Journalism Laureate by Purdue University.

Based in Dublin, Ireland, Cormac Sheridan has been writing about all aspects of the European and global biotechnology industry for the past 15 years, during which time he has been a correspondent for BioWorld and a regular contributor to many other international and national publications. He has also been a guest lecturer on the BSc in genetics program at University College Cork (UCC) for the last eight years. He has a BSc in microbiology from UCC and an MA in journalism from Dublin City University.
